Discourse Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Discourse Analysis - Assignment Example Through investigation of three paradigms: empirical, interpretive and critical, the research uncovered that the dominant discourse is that such bias is not present in the health services sector and that perceptions of discrimination is a product of pre-existing lack of self-esteem and lack of resiliency as a result of cultural inadequacies prevalent in aboriginal cultures. It was discovered that power is maintained in the health sector while deliberate or unconscious marginalization against aborigines dominates the Canadian social and professional sentiment about aborigines. The study concludes that while the researcher has personally observed these biased attitudes, culpability for negative health outcomes on aborigines may be attributable to these populations themselves. Despite the fact that the Canadian health care system provides a legislative framework for ensuring equity of care provision for all members of Canadian society, discrimination seems to be still prevalent in the nursing profession. Bias can be oftentimes observable when providing care to aboriginal members of society, namely against those sharing ethnic characteristics of Indian, MÃ ©tis and Inuit native peoples. Anti-aboriginal discrimination manifests itself through stereotyping, which stigmatizes these society members even in the health care environment. Long-standing stereotypes often portray aboriginals as being pervasive drug users, violent and incessantly unemployed (de Leeuw, Kobayashi & Cameron, 2011). The most prominent label marginalizing Canadian aboriginals is that they are highly dependent on welfare programs and incompetent to the degree that their affairs should be fully supervised by the Canadian federal government (Erickson, 2005). In the health care sector, Canadian aboriginals seek health services, though disproportionate in frequency to non-aboriginal patients.

Examining The Importance Of Computer Technology Information Technology Essay

Examining The Importance Of Computer Technology Information Technology Essay Why is the future of computer technology an important role in the society. Here are few of the reasons why it is an important role to the society. First it is important to the educational field, for the reason that most of what we do is based on computers. Second it is important to the business field; because it can help with the speed accuracy and relevant so that businesses can grow and less expenditure. Third; technically speaking it is important to our economy for the speed the connection around the world and also the communication. Lastly; technology is one of the important roles in our environment. What I mean by that is that technology helps us to maintain our environment by reducing wastes for example; papers, plastic etc. Now those are some of the importance and also the advantages of the technology. Technology also has its disadvantages and here are some. We all know that technology grow everyday and people inventing are just eager to invent the most compatible and reliable gadgets to be used by the end users, which is good but at the same time it has its disadvantages here are some of the disadvantages of the technology. The technology makes kids these days lazy and can place children at risk for harmful effects on their physical, social, and psychological development. Children need physical activity, social interaction, and the love and guidance of caring adults to be healthy, happy, and productive. Nowadays businesses are mostly connected to internet and do business online which is good; however there are people out there scamming people with fake businesses online and hackers to hack into your system and steal information or money. The use of computer also results into unemployment as computer can perform the task that might need nearly six to seven workers. Unemployment is likely to result into crimes. Continuous work with comput er causes loss of eyesight in the long run. Internet, which is widely used to see pornographic scenes, will lead to sex violences and more. To conclude it even though technology has its downside I still think that in the future it will be beneficial to our society and environment. The Future of Computer Technology Computer technology is spreading all over the world. Even though it might have few disadvantages but the advantages are still spectacular and very useful to our society. First up is the education field, in the United States Department of Education researched that children tend to learn more with computers than by reading books or do research using encyclopedias. Computers have ways to crab students attention by the animated graphics, sound and colors. It also allow student to communicate with their friends, families and the world. In addition educational field, computer is one of the must to know basic because everything we do is somehow related to computer and the technology. (Mr.Pandys article published 2010) states that the importance of computers in school will help students prepared and shape up for the future of technologies. He also says in his article that students who have knowledge in computer will have better chances of job opportunities than others that dont have experien ces in computers. Technology in the classroom is not just for the students. Teachers can use the technology to keep student records, plan lessons, communicate with parents that will save them time, or going around with heavy books, chalk, pen, papers etc. so the role of computer technology in the educational field is massive and still eager for more knowledge about the technology world. Majority of businesses today relies on the computer technology in so many ways. Like the convenience of the business, few years ago when you walk in to a office you see a lot of filing cabinet or drawers, fax machines, typewriters and papers all over the place. Todays office relies on a computer that you can send anything anytime store all your data or information on the external hard drive of computers, also you can just type and print using the computer. Computer helps us in many ways and businesses too. Computer technology also helps us in accuracy and time in the business and the offices. For example; the auditor, accountant, and finance there are numerous software for that kind of job that can help with the accuracy of the data and lessen the paper usage that will help our environment. Another importance of the computer and the business is the communication. These days communication is been one of the best thing that has happened in our life. Communication through internet has h elped the business in so many ways like meetings, information, updates, expenditures and more. You can set up a meeting with your staffs via web conference like youre sitting next to them. It also saves you time and money for traveling around the globe just for meetings or letters and also it updates you on whats happening in the world. Like (Scholasticus 2010) says, using computers in todays business has enhanced the performance of employees and the business. According to (Geeta Dhavale 2010) she says that computers are widely used in all the hospitals for numerous purposes apart from administration, accounting, billing, and appointments. It literally helps doctors in performing various surgeries; especially laparoscopic surgeries are possible because of computers where doctors insert the medical tools and small camera and conduct an operation with the help of computers monitors. Even X-rays, CT scan, Ultrasound etc they are all computer based. (Evens) says, that Computers are also important on the medicine field for the analysis part so that it will save time and will help you to find a cure for a specific illness. It also important for the doctors so that they can communicate via internet to see the latest updates on the medical field and also be able to do web conferencing with other doctors around the globe. To conclude it, computer technology has been spectacular for these past few years, by being as huge as a room to the size of a book. The importance of computer technology in our society and environment keeps expanding both needs and wants. Elementary schools, high school, college, universities, businesses are both connected to the use of computer and tend to want more. Information Technology programmers have been working finding a way to create the most compatible technology that the end user will be satisfied with it and yet it will all trace back to computers. See computer technology has its disadvantages but the advantages are far better and useful in our lives, it helps us with the speed time, accuracy and relevant. The speed of sending a message via internet is a matter of minutes and at the same time it saves your time. In the business field and medical field, and the NASA accuracy is their life they cannot afford to make mistakes and that is when the computer comes in handy to help them do the job. To summarize all the information and research are all relevant and useful for the society. Even though computer technology has its disadvantages but still the advantages of computer technology and its future will help our society and will save many life. Canterbury tales :: essays research papers

Chaucer begins The Nun’s Priest’s Tale by describing a simple widow and her two simple daughters. They own a barn where a magnificently handsome cock with a beautiful and accurate â€Å"cock-a-doodle-doo†. Here, his seven wives also live; his favorite is the most beautiful Pertelote. He one day speaks to her about a dream. In this dream, a fox eats Chanticleer, the cock, and Chanticleer now worries that it may come true. Pertelote does not believe in this predestination and gives her argument. She then calls Chanticleer a coward and threatens that she cannot love a coward. She thinks that the dream was caused by something Chanticleer ate and suggests a remedy. Chanticleer tries to convince Pertelote that his dream has meaning my biting people who dreamt of murder and then discovered it. But after his argument, he decides to leave the subject and compliment his Pertelote. The two make love and he leaves his safe perch. The fox, which has been stalking Chanticleer, flatters and asks Chanticleer to sing his beautiful songs. As the blushing Chanticleer closes his eyes to begin his song, the fox snatches him and runs. The hens all screech and wildly call the attention of the widow. Before long, the town is chasing the fox. Chanticleer advises the fox to boast about his accomplishments, and when the fox opens his mouth, Chanticleer escapes. The Nun’s Priest’s Tale is an exempla. This is a sorry that teaches a moral lesson through example. The lessons learned in this particular story are summarized at the conclusion by the characters in the story themselves. The both learned survival strategies. Chanticleer begins: â€Å"And for those who blink when they should look, God blot them from this everlasting Book!† â€Å"Nay, rather,† said the fox, â€Å"his plagues be flung On all who chatter that should hold their tongue.† (cite book p 120) The obvious theme is the idea of dreams and determinism – â€Å"the view that human actions are entirely controlled by previous conditions, operating under laws of nature, but understood as ruling out free will†(cite the dic of cult lit). While Pertelote references Cato and explains dreams medically—that they are caused by wrong foods and can be cured with remedies such as worms and herbs—Chanticleer explains dreams as prophesies referencing Cato, St Kenelm, Andromache, Hector, and Daniel and Joseph from the Old testament. Another theme is woman acting as the source of evil and causing the fall of mankind.

Was Mandela a Freedom Fighter or Terroist?

Was Mandela a freedom fighter or a terrorist? Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the Eastern Cape of South Africa (Williams and Hermann, 2012). After hearing the stories of his ancestor’s bravery, he was inspired and he dreamed of making his own impact to his people for freedom. (Venter, 2012). I believe that Nelson Mandela was a freedom fighter and not a terrorist. Sometimes the definitions of those two words may get mixed up and it is quite hard to identify the difference between the two, especially in this case.A terrorist deliberately targets the lives of innocent people for political reasons whereas a freedom fighter takes part in a violent struggle to achieve freedom, they do not aim at the lives of the public. If you were to look at the two definitions, I believe that Nelson Mandela should be classified as a freedom fighter as he did not target the lives of people; he fought for the freedom of the people of South Africa. In 1944 he joined the African National C ongress (A political party made to unite all African people and give everyone equal human rights) (Unwembi, 2011) and was the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the rebellious part of ANC.Even though Umkhonto we Sizwe set up a series of attacks, they were fighting for equal rights and freedom against apartheid as apartheid had dived South Africa into races and eventually had given the ‘White South Africa’ control over the whole of South Africa. They also made new laws to create segregation. (Brain, 2011) Umkhonto we Sizwe said â€Å"The time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices – submit or fight. That time has now come to South Africa. We shall not submit and we have no choice but to hit back by all means in our power in defence of our people, our future, and our freedom. † This quote shows that they were fighting for freedom; they had sacrificed everything, knowing the consequences that could occur they still fought for the rights f or their people. Film Review of Apocalypto

1. Make a film review of the film focusing on the major aspects of Maya culture: a) Major characters in the film: * Jaguar Paw- son of Flint Sky * Flint Sky- leader of the village * Seven- wife of Jaguar Paw * Turtles Run- little son of Jaguar Paw * Zero Wolf- leader of the Mayan tribe who ravaged the village of Jaguar Paw * Middle Eye- son of Zero Wolf, he is almost killed by Jaguar Paw b) Aspects of Maya culture -Mayans practice human sacrifice for their gods to hear their prayers.Mayans capture other royalties from other tribes for them to sacrifice. The high priests cut the breasts of the captives to get the beating heart before beheading them. They offer the beating heart to their gods. The Mayans also practice slavery. c) Factors that brought the downfall of Mayan civilization. -The first possibility that brought the downfall of the civilization is drought, due to lack of water; they cannot plant crops including their main crop, the maize. The second possibility is that rulers f elt that their power is failing so they offer more and more human sacrifices to the point that they get captives from their own tribe. 2. Try to explain the following: a) The opening quote at the start of the film: â€Å"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within† —W. Durant -For me, the quote states that a great civilization or tribe can only be conquered if people from within will destroy it.People that are settling in that certain tribe will always be the one who can destroy a prosperous tribe because they know what is the strength and the weakness of their place. b) The message relayed/conveyed by the arrival of Spanish ships in the end of the film. -I think Spanish conquistadors will use the â€Å"spread of Christianity† because they carry a cross. They will befriend the Mayans and they will let them be treated by them as their friends.
